A balanced diet for Diabetic Patients

A balanced diet for Diabetic Patients

Living with Diabetes can be a huge struggle; but it is a bigger struggle to find the right balance in diet. Here we have compiled a list of things you can include in your diet to maintain your health and to have yummy food.

  1. Fish

A number of diabetic people have become pescatarians after they were diagnosed with diabetes. Fish is high protein and also has components that aid in reducing the risk of heart diseases. Diabetic people are known to be prone to strokes, but a fish-heavy diet greatly decreases the occurrence of strokes. Since fish has a lot of protein content, it increases the metabolic rate and gives a sense of being full to the consumer.

  1. Leafy Greens

Leafy green like kale and spinach are low in carbohydrates and low in calories. During digestion, these low carb foods, greatly increase the blood sugar level and helps to maintain optimal functioning of the glands. Diabetic patients are known to have heart related diseases as well; the antioxidants in the food help keep the heart and the eye healthy. Leafy greens should be a must in the diet of any diabetic individual.

Health-Benefits-of-Spinach

  1. Eggs

After fish, eggs are known to be rich in protein as well. Eggs also increase the metabolic rate of the individual and thus give him or her the sense of being full. Eggs are known to improve good cholesterol in the body and decrease inflammation markers. They also help in maintaining insulin ranges within the body, thus aiding patients with diabetes 2. Besides these benefits, eggs are also rich in antioxidants that help to maintain eye health.

We can go on to list a number of other foods, but the fact of the matter is that you will have to greatly improve your diet regardless. Diabetic patients shouldn’t focus on what to be consumed, they should be focusing on what needs to be stopped. There is no point having leafy greens for lunch and then going to KFC and having an unhealthy amount of chicken wings. Plan your weeks in such a way that you can allow yourself to cheat on one day, but stay off the calorie filled drinks on any occasion. They set you back a lot and the progress you made for months can easily be undermined.

Try to set up a plan with your doctor to ensure that you are getting all the necessary minerals and you are able to maintain a good balanced diet. Involve a loved one into the whole process to keep a check on your eating habits. Improve your diet and cheat small; over time try to reduce the amount of times you cheat in a month. Slowly but surely, progress can be made.

2017’s most popular diets for healthy living

2017’s most popular diets for healthy living

The year of 2017 has popularized and promoted healthy living to a whole new level. Different kinds of diets have been introduced which ensure healthy body and mind. It might get confusing deciding which diet to follow or get a list of all those diets in one place. So here is a list of some of the most popular diets for your information-

  • Ketogenic diet- This diet involves reducing the intake of carbohydrates in order to use the fat in your body for energy. This diet has been used for decades for the treatment of epilepsy and several other diseases. This diet requires you to take in high amounts of protein and healthy fats. The process of ketosis breaks down the fat in your body with the help of substances called ketones. However, this diet is not recommended for those with type 1 diabetes.
  • Atkins diet- This diet focuses on controlling the insulin levels through a low-carbohydrate diet. When a lot of insulin and sugar is taken, it allows the body to store the sugar which later turn into fat. So when the insulin and sugar levels are decreased, it motivates the body to use the stored fats in the body, hence reducing the fat in the body.

KETOGENICVSATKINS

  • Weight watchers diet- Weight watchers is a company which works as a support group for those who want to lose weight or are afraid they might gain back the lost weight. One can join this group physically or through their online portal. Once you join the group you are provided with diet plans, workout plans as per your need and a lot of support for you to stick to those plans.
  • Zone diet- The zone diet aims at a nutritionally balanced diet. It focuses on having 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent fats and 30 percent protein in each meal. It also focuses on controlling sugar and insulin levels to assists in weight-loss and body weight control. This diet encourages intake of high-quality carbohydrates and unrefined natural fats.
  • Raw food diet- This diet discourages the intake of processed foods and drinks. This diet involves the intake of plan based products or organically produced food items. There are even types of raw foodies- vegetarian raw foodies, vegan raw foodies, omnivore raw foodies and carnivore raw foodies.
  • Mediterranean diet- This diet takes inspirations from the food habits of the people of France, Spain, Portugal, southern Italy, and Greece. In this diet, the main source of dietary fat is through the consumption of a lot of fresh fruits for deserts, nuts, beans, whole grains, seeds and olive oil. Cheese and yogurt are the main forms of dairy food and fish and poultry are the main sources of meat protein.
The Best Alcohol for Your Health

The Best Alcohol for Your Health

Are you a health freak or the person that somewhat aspires to be one? Well, if you’ve been through the journey of weight loss, you probably had to give up all of those delicious alcohol drinks, right? And, what a sad departure that must have been.

Although drinking a lot of alcohol is not as enjoyable to some as it is for others, we totally get that every once in a while, whether it be on a Friday night, at a party or wedding, or simply enjoying a glass of wine with your dinner, alcohol can still be enjoyed if done in the right way. In fact, some alcoholic drinks might even be good for you and add to your health.

Ever since 2010, there has been the biggest craze in health, fitness and wellness. Over the last couple of years, this has even caused businesses to sky-rocket because of it. Bottom line, being healthy is hotter than ever before and to some, counting calories means not drinking any calories.

Although drinking your calories could be detrimental to your diet, we’ve got you covered with some of the lightest, and healthiest, alcoholic drinks in the world.

Alcoholic drinks you’re allowed to drink on your healthy journey

Whiskey & Gin

Whiskey has always been considered as a healthier option when it comes to alcoholic spirits and when mixed with gin… We’re happy to tell you that it’s good. Sorry Vodka… but Whiskey at least has a touch of flavour. Referred to as Bourbon, with an average of 100 calories per 1.5 ounces, it’s much more satisfying and will help keep your diet on track too. Although this mix doesn’t include nearly any nutrition, you should drink in moderation and definitely not make a daily habit out of it as it could potentially kill you. Also, be sure not to mix it with sugary drinks. Either you drink it on the rocks or a shot of Gin. Your waist will thank you too.

Vodka Soda

So, carbonated water with a kick? Well, yes…But, if that’s not your idea of fun, then why not add some lime, lemon or fruit to it? Sounds crazy but its pretty good. This drink is good if you’re focused on your weight and is considered one of the lowest calorie drinks at the bar. With Vodka having an average of 96 calories per serving, soda water has no calories at all. There are no nutritional benefits in this drink, just a possible headache if you drink one too many.

vodka

Wine

We’re all familiar with the many heart-healthy benefits of red wine. In fact, some say that much like apples, a glass a day will keep your doctor away.

With moderate levels of iron, 9.4% of potassium, 5% of magnesium, it is also filled with an abundance of antioxidants which include both flavonoids and non-flavonoids. It also reduces the risk of blood clots and lowers LDL cholesterol. You can enjoy a glass at as little as 120 calories minus the guilt.

Sangria

With ingredients such as red wine, orange zest, lime, orange juice, lemon, various berries and a hint of sugar, this is a higher calorie drink, yet one won’t kill your diet at all. It contains more sugar derived from fruit than anything else and includes fairly large amounts of Vitamins, helps protect your body from infections and also, is rich in many antioxidants that will fight disease and give you that perfect glowing skin.

Causes of type 2 diabetes

Causes of type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is one of the most deadly diseases which is consuming the lives of many people. The disease is caused due to various reasons, and one of the main reasons is due to our body’s inability to respond to insulin. The other reason is due to the poor lifestyle of people. In today’s world, many people are getting affected with type 2 diabetes as they do not eat healthily or have a proper workout plan. Diabetes is quite common in adults, but children who are obese tend to have diabetes at a younger age.  One can prevent diabetes just by leading a healthy lifestyle, once you know the causes you can find out preventive measures. Some of the risk factors for the causes of diabetes include:

Weight:

Being overweight is one of the primary reasons for the causes of type 2 diabetes. If you have fat tissues, your cells will become resistant to insulin. We live in a world where people have no time to have a balanced diet. People eat to satisfy hunger, and most of them do not eat healthily. Having a balanced diet is very important to manage your weight, and you also need to appropriate amount of exercises to keep your body toned. But remember that just because you are not overweight, it does not mean that you will not be affected by type 2 diabetes.

Fat accumulation:

If your body starts to accumulate fat in your abdomen you are likely to be affected by type 2 diabetes than when your body stores the fat in your thighs or hips. Make sure that you are not accumulating fat in your abdomen. Try to do the necessary exercises and reduce the fat content in your body.

Inactivity of the body:

If you are inactive for most parts of the day, you are likely to get diabetes. You need to move around and do some work to stay fit. When you do physical activity, you will be able to maintain the fat content, and you will use up all the glucose stored in your body.

Family history:

Type 2 diabetes is a genetic disease which means if your parents or grandparents have diabetes you are likely to have diabetes too. But you can control it by controlling your lifestyle. You don’t need to panic if your family has diabetes; all you need to do is increase your physical activity and consume healthy food. When you start leading a healthy lifestyle, you will be able to fight diabetes effectively.

Gestational diabetes:

If you had gestational diabetes, you are likely to have type 2 diabetes at a later stage. If your baby weighs more than 4 kgs, you might tend to develop diabetes.

Age:

The risk of type 2 diabetes increases as you grow older. Especially after the age of 45 people tend to exercise less and have reduced physical activities.

SIX FACTS ON HEALTHY EATING

SIX FACTS ON HEALTHY EATING

The biggest factor that contributes to leading a long, healthy lifestyle is to eat healthy. While there is a popular notion that dieting or starving is what essentially helps to reduce weight, this is not necessarily true. All you need to do in order to stay fit and healthy is to simply eat a balanced and well portioned meal, thrice a day.
Here we have listed out ten facts related to food and healthy eating.

1: SOME FATS ARE GOOD:
While Trans fats and saturated fats are bad for your body, unsaturated fats contain certain essential acids that can help reduce LDL cholesterol and increase good HDL. Using canola oil whilst cooking is a good way to ensure that you include only good fat in your diet and avoid those that can make you put on weight.

2: EAT ENOUGH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES:
“Eat your fruit and greens” is something all moms repeat every chance they get and there is in fact, a good reason for it. Fruits and vegetables are the richest source of all the essential nutrients that our body needs in order to function and stay healthy.  Fruits and vegetables are filling, tasty and can keep many diseases at bay.

3: EDIBLE SEEDS ARE NUTRITIOUS:

A generous helping of chia seeds can give you a good amount of the recommended fibre, while flax seeds on the other hand are rich in fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 that are good for your body. These seeds also contain vitamins like B1, B2 etc. that can boost your energy and immunity. Pumpkin seeds are again, a great source of magnesium and rich in zinc, copper etc.
edible-seeds

4: NOT ALL PROTEINS ARE CREATED THE SAME:
Proteins are a huge part of cell creation and repair and thus at least 10- 30 per cent of our calorie needs must be met by protein. However, it should be known that not all protein is healthy to consume on a daily basis. Protein like ground beef or hot dogs can contribute to high levels of LDL and add to your calorie intake in an unhealthy manner. It is instead recommended to consume lean proteins like chicken or fish to fulfil your protein requirements.

5: SUPPLEMENTS CAN NEVER REPLACE REAL FOOD:
Multi vitamins can be very beneficial in the sense that they often contain vitamins like Vitamin D that could be absent in a regular diet. However, entirely substituting the nutrients in food for these supplements can do no good. The vitamins and minerals present in a multi vitamin can in no way match the large variety of nutrients that you get from consuming actual food.  Regular use of such supplements is often just an excuse for a bad diet which can very much harm your body.

6: FINALLY, HEALTHY EATING IS A LIFE STYLE CHOICE, NOT A FAD DIET:
Good Eating is not just a phase which like a diet will end in a period of time. It is a choice that must be diligently followed throughout lifetime for one to remain healthy and well. Further, Healthy eating should not be mistaken for fad diets. Though these diets might ensure sudden weight loss and cleansing, they can be detrimental to your health in the long run and might put quite a large number of restrictions on what you can eat, which can on the whole, harm you. Rather than following such short term diets, try instead to devote yourself towards consuming healthy, organic food for a life time. This will ensure you stay fit and happy, without any harmful consequences.

Diabetes Tips

Diabetes Tips

Diabetes can be a pain in the pancreas when you think about it. You will have to know what you eat and keep track of things as well. So our primary advice to you is that cooking at home is always going to be better than going out and eating. Here are some tips to help you out.

  1. Eat whole

Start eating things that are made of whole wheat flour and bread, and if you’re someone who is looking for a great start to the morning replace your regular cereal with oats and barley. But any change would be difficult, so go slow but consciously keep switching things to whole wheat.

  1. Fibre Fibre Fibre!!!

Make sure to include at least 8 grams of fibre per meal; it helps fight heart disease for starters. And the fact that heart disease and diabetes go hand in hand is a good enough reason to start including fibre. But if you’re someone who still prefers a carbohydrate-rich meal then eating fibre makes a lot of sense, because fibre helps to control blood sugar levels and gives you a feeling of being full.

  1. Go for Good Fats

Most people will tell you to stay of fats, but there is something called “good fats” that can actually make all the difference. Monounsaturated fats such as nuts, olive oil, avocados and canola oil can be used to marinate your entrees and salads. Monounsaturated fats can actually help lower your blood sugar levels, but it’s always good to consume them in the right proportions since they also contain a lot of calories.

  1. A Lean Machine

There is so much craze for the lean diet, but it’s actually more beneficial for diabetes patients. Don’t go for food products that contain saturated fats, go for a lean cut of meats or low-fat dairy products. If you’re a vegetarian, then go for high protein products such as lentils, beans and nuts.

  1. What about that Drink?

Well, it is safe to say that you have to stay away from high calorie and sugary drinks, so your customary drinks such as Pepsi, coke, etc.; need to be thrown out. And also it is wise to stay away from alcohol as well; alcohol can be quite harmful to diabetic patients if consumed too much. But if you still want a drink to finish off your meal go for fizzy flavoured drinks that are not artificially sweetened. If that doesn’t appeal to you, then there is always non-calorie tea and coffee to finish off your meal in style.

Sugar-Free Chocolate Recipes for People with Diabetes

Sugar-Free Chocolate Recipes for People with Diabetes

Being a diabetic patient can be complicated and challenging that too if you are an individual who loves sweets. Sugary food is one of the most desired food in the world. It can be tough for people not to eat such delicacies. Just because a person happens to have diabetes, it is not fair that they don’t get to eat some of the best-tasting food in the world. When we restrict ourselves not to eat anything we tend to eat more. It’s like our brain focuses on the food we tell ourselves not to eat.

Chocolates are one of the food items loved by everyone all around the world from children to older people. It is one thing served at every occasion and festival. From Birthdays to Halloween chocolates are one of the most important things we all love.

Unfortunately, diabetes deals with the increase in the glucose level in the blood and chocolates contain a significant amount of glucose content in it. First, let us understand what diabetes means, it is a condition where the body fails to produce insulin to balance out the glucose produced when the food gets consumed. It is often known as diabetes Mellitus which is a metabolic disease where the glucose level in the blood gets increased. The increase in the glucose level in the blood is mostly due to the inadequate production of insulin to balance out the glucose produced. Diabetes can occur in anyone; our food habits are one of the leading causes of diabetes.

People with Diabetes don’t Deserve Health Insurance?

People with Diabetes don’t Deserve Health Insurance?

Do Diabetics deserve health insurance? The very sentence sounds absurd. Who are we to judge another person’s life choices and patterns? Recently a few months back we got news from the white house that President Donald Trump’s Budget Director Mick Mulvaney has said that people who type 2 diabetes do not deserve health insurance since they gave themselves the disease. Probably, Mick Mulvaney, the budget director knows very little about the causes of diabetes. Donald trump is a very respectable president, but such a view from his budget director is not advisable from him.

If he considers that diabetes is caused only by eating patterns, then he is hard-nosed. In that case, almost every disease we have these days are caused mostly because of our living habits. The world was created correctly without any sin, but as humankind brought upon sickness and pain among ourselves through our life pattern. It is like saying people with AIDS do not deserve health insurance because he made a wrong decision or cancer patients do not get health insurance as they have troubled a part of their body for a long time.

No one should get blamed for the difficulties they face. It is very inhumane to say something like people with diabetes do not deserve health insurance.

 Health Insurance

The following are the reasons why diabetic patients need health insurance.

  • Hereditary Causes and understanding Diabetes.
  • Health Insurance policies.
  • If wellness of people is concerned, the food distribution pattern needs alteration.

Hereditary Causes and understanding Diabetes:

The body fails to produce insulin to balance out the glucose produced when the food gets consumed.

Diabetes is also a hereditary disease. Even if you try to follow a strict diet and not eat high calorie containing food and exercise on a regular basis, there are chances for you to get diabetes if you have a family history of relatives who have had diabetes. So as a budget advisor Mick cannot say that people bring about diabetes on themselves.

Health Insurance:

Health insurance is defined as the coverage that is provided to cover the cost of medical care. Diabetes is a disease which affects your health and costs money for you to get medical care. So as per the definition of a health insurance diabetics need health insurance, and there is no question in it.

If wellness of people is concerned, the food distribution pattern needs alteration:

If you do not want to waste money on giving health insurance to people, then you can first spend money on education what to eat and what not to eat. Provide the entire country with high-calorie food and demanding for cancellation of health insurance is very dense.

General Diet for Diabetes

General Diet for Diabetes

One of the most common diseases people are facing in today’s world is diabetes. In our busy schedule, we try to grab a casual meal and fill our stomach and do not think of our health. We tend to consume high-calorie food and never care about our health or diet plans. Eating unhealthy can increase your risks not only to diabetes but also to heart attacks, obesity, and other diseases.

Diabetes is one of the most shared and deadly diseases in the world. About 29 million Americans are affected by diabetes. Diabetes is one of the primary cause of heart strokes, amputation, kidney failure, and blindness. Diabetes is one disease which kills about one American in every three minutes every day.

The body fails to produce insulin to balance out the glucose produced when the food gets consumed.

Diet for Diabetes

There are three types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes often occurs in children or people below the age group of 40. Type one diabetes usually is known as juvenile diabetes or early-onset diabetes. If an individual is affected with type 1 diabetes, then he/she must take insulin injections all their life.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes in common among people who are more than 40 years of age. The type 2 diabetes is caused due to the inability of our body to produce insulin.
  • Gestational Diabetes: Gestational diabetes affects pregnant ladies who happen to have high glucose level in their blood. Most gestational diabetes cases cured with exercise and diet control.

The following are some of the meal plans you can follow to prevent diabetes or have it controlled:

  • Reducing carbohydrate in our food to prevent diabetes.
  • To have a balanced diet, you must eat a variety of food items.
  • Limiting or avoiding alcohol and sweets.

Lowering your carbohydrate intake to prevent diabetes:

Carbohydrates are the energy sources to our body. The carbohydrate which we eat gets converted into glucose, and this glucose is used by the cells to produce energy. The excess carbohydrates also get converted into glucose and are stored as fat in our body. The increase of carbohydrates in our body can enhance our blood glucose level, and if you have diabetes, then you must reduce the intake of carbohydrates as your body will not have the ability to produce insulin and all the excess glucose can get stored as fat.

To have a balanced diet you must eat a variety of food items:

Eating a variety of food can help you get all the nutrition’s your body needs. Consume large quantities of vegetables which are fresh and green. Starchy vegetables are also very good for health. You can eat fresh fruits which contain less sugar content. Try to replace all the white food in your diet with brown food. Wheat is a good substitute for rice.

Limiting or avoiding alcohol and sweets:

Avoid eating sweets or drinking alcohol as it increases your risks to various diseases.
